Spicy Split Peas Dhaltjies (Chili bites)

These dhaltjies are a Cape Malay version of a Bhaji and the perfect comfort food snack.

1 cup Akila green split peas (soaked for two hours or overnight)
Water, as needed for blending
1 cup flour, or as needed to get a loose dropping consistency batter
2 tsps fresh coriander, chopped
1 small onion, finely chopped
4 garlic cloves, grated
3 green chili, finely chopped
2 tsps salt
2 tsps jeera
2 Tbsps curry powder
2 tsps cumin seeds
2 tsps aniseed
1 handful of spinach, chopped
1 heaped tsp baking powder
Oil, for deep frying

Blend the green split peas, with the water it soaked in. Add more water as needed to blend the split peas until smooth.

In a large bowl, add the blended split peas, together with the other ingredients. Mix together until well combined

Add the oil into a deep frying pan over medium heat

Using a tablespoon, scoop up some of the batter (use another spoon to help gather the batter if needed) and carefully drop the batter in the oil and fry until golden brown on both sides.

Remove from the pan and place on paper towelling to drain off excess oil

Serve with chili dip or chili chutney.
